Jebel Ali Free Zone

The Jebel Ali Free Zone is one of the earliest projects of the Government of the Dubai Emirate, aimed at attracting of foreign investment assets to the national economy. This economic zone was established in the beginning of 1985, and has become one of the largest investment areas in Dubai, UAE over the past decades. Thousands of international companies, among which there are the hundreds of largest international companies and holdings, carry out their economical activity on the vast territory of more than 40 square kilometers.

The main advantage of the JAFZA economic zone is the direct access to the international transport hubs; in particular, the shipping port of Jebel Ali is located right on the territory of the Free Zone. Accordingly, the norms of the current corporate law provide the following legal forms of international companies:

  • FZE: companies which are registered on the territory of the Free Zone and have one founder;
  • FZCO: companies which are registered on the territory of the Free zone and have up to five founders;
  • Offshore companies: this free zone is the only one in Dubai, which allows to register this type of companies. Moreover, these companies, unlike the offshore companies in Ras Al Khaimah, have the right to purchase the real estate in Dubai.

The activity of the international companies, which are registered in the Jebel Ali jurisdiction, UAE, is carried out under the following conditions:

  • There is no requirements for the involvement of the local sponsor, the registered company  can be owned for 100% by a foreign citizen;
  • The companies distribute their financial assets and earned revenues independently and without restrictions;
  • The international companies are exempted from import and export duties;
  • The international companies are exempted from all types of corporate taxation;
  • There is the possibility to involve the foreign manpower reserves, with registration of the appropriate visas and labor cards;
  • No restrictions on the repatriation of investment assets and the country currency exchange regulation.

The procedure of registration / incorporation of the foreign company can take several weeks. The formation of the share capital of the company, which is rather high for most companies in this FTZ, is a mandatory condition for obtaining a business license.
